Vancouver International Marathon

Recognized as the city’s only Boston-qualifying marathon, the Vancouver International Marathon draws elite international athletes alongside recreational runners, charity participants, and first-time marathoners. With competitors representing dozens of countries, it’s a truly global race set against one of the most scenic urban backdrops in North America.

The weekend offers a variety of race options designed to suit runners of all ages and abilities, including the full 42.2-kilometre marathon, the 21.1-kilometre half marathon, an 8-kilometre race, and a 2.4-kilometre kids run. There is also a virtual participation option most years allowing runners to complete their chosen distance within a designated timeframe.

A Scenic Course Through Vancouver

The marathon route showcases some of Vancouver’s most scenic neighbourhoods and landmarks. Runners begin near Queen Elizabeth Park before travelling through Kerrisdale and around the University of British Columbia campus. From there, the course continues past Spanish Banks and through Kitsilano before crossing the Burrard Bridge.

Later portions of the race take runners alongside English Bay and around the Stanley Park Seawall, with impressive views of the ocean, mountains and downtown skyline. The Marathon finishes on West Pender Street in downtown Vancouver.

More Than Just a Marathon

In addition to the road races, the event weekend includes a lively street festival near the finish area. Visitors can enjoy live music, sponsor booths, food vendors, and a celebratory atmosphere that welcomes both runners and supporters.

Another highlight is the Health, Sports & Lifestyle Expo at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The expo features running gear, fitness brands, nutrition products, and interactive displays, making it a must-visit for athletes and fans alike.

The BMO Vancouver Marathon anchors the city’s spring running season. Other notable races throughout the year include the Vancouver Sun Run, Vancouver Half-Marathon, Boundary Bay Marathon and Vancouver Historic Half.

Together, these events help establish Vancouver as one of Canada’s most active and marathon-friendly cities.

Why Run the BMO Vancouver Marathon?

The BMO Vancouver Marathon combines a Boston-qualifying 42.2-kilometre course with ocean, mountain and city views.
